Stage Two began much like the first, with strong cross winds that challenged the peloton at every turn along the coast of Australia. The 100 man group quickly split into two, with four Jelly Belly riders smartly finding a place in the front.
The 32 man field in the front included Jelly Belly riders Bernard van Ulden, Kiel Reijnen, Will Routley and Johnny Clarke. At 25 kilometers to go, 13 of those riders used the wind to their advantage once again and broke away. Van Ulden stayed in the winning break, finishing 12th. He is now 15th in the GC. Although Reijnen wasn’t able to get into the front group, he climbed like a mountain goat and is now in 2nd in the KOM.
Stage Three will be 102 miles from Warrnambool to Apollo Bay. This coastal course will feature two more opportunities as KOMs for Reijnen to climb even higher in the rankings.
