Cycling fans came out in droves last week to watch the 2009 Amgen Tour of California. Despite the rain in the early part of the week, more than two million spectators showed up, making this year’s Tour of California the most watched sporting event in the history of California.
The Jelly Belly Pro Cycling Team finished the race by claiming many good positions. In the Prologue TT Brad Huff placed 15th. In Stage 4 Kiel Reijnen, a.k.a. Billy Goat, grabbed 12th place after climbing over 115 miles of the Sierra Mountains. New member of the Jelly Belly squad Matty Crane was awarded Stage 5’s Most Courageous Rider after navigating the longest route in this year’s Tour. Jelly Belly riders Nick Reistad and Kiel Reijnen claimed 13th and 14th, respectively, at the end of Stage 7.
While most of the riders claim to feel tired and sore, there is no rest for the weary. The riders have already rested for one day and are back on the roads training for the next race. Most of the team will be split up into smaller groups while they travel to participate in different races. Next up on the list, San Dimas stage race March 20 to 22 in San Dimas, Calif. and The Redlands Bicycle Classic March 26 to 29 in Redlands, Calif.
